Each character has a limited pool of SP to work with, can cause status effects and there’s even a navigator character who narrates the flow of battle. I wasn’t a fan of how Arena stretched out the series’ storyline, although Labrys, an android with a thick Boston accent, was a great addition to the cast. Like Arc System Works’ previous work on Guilty Gear and Blazblue, Persona 4 Arena had great animation and a dense story mode with lengthy cutscenes shown in a visual novel style. Despite the title, Persona 4 Arena also featured characters from the third game in the series, with a plot that tied them both together and gave everyone an excuse to square off with their magic psychological powers.

Taking note of the Personas onscreen is particularly important, since once they sustain enough damage they’re temporarily sealed, limiting your offensive options. Like the stands from Jojo’s, each character fights alongside their Persona, with separate buttons controlling both standard and Persona attacks. Given how how much the Persona games borrowed from Hirohiko Araki’s popular manga, it’s funny how their fighting game returns to the side-scrolling style of Capcom’s Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure adaptation.
